NAGOYA — Two people died after a bus overturned and caught fire on an expressway in Nagoya on Monday morning, local police said.

Seven others were injured including a person in a car traveling behind the bus, according to the prefectural police and firefighting authorities.

Around 10:15 a.m., police received an emergency call saying that a bus was on its side and on fire. The accident occurred near the Toyoyama-Minami exit on the Route 11 Komaki section of the Nagoya Expressway network.

According to sources including the Aichi prefectural police’s expressway patrol unit, the fire was extinguished around 12:35 p.m.

The bus was operated by Aoi Traffic Corp., a Komaki, Aichi Prefecture-based company, which said the bus was likely going from central Nagoya to the prefectural-run Nagoya Airport. A male driver drove the vehicle.

The accident site was about 2 kilometers southwest of Nagoya Airport and water-filled road barriers at the exit and entrance ramps had burst. The expressway patrol unit believes that it is highly likely the bus crashed into the barriers and overturned.
